The Helen Diller Family Foundation’s Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards program is now accepting nominations for 2020. The awards recognize up to 15 extraordinary Jewish teens annually with $36,000 each to support their ongoing social impact projects, or to further their education. Up to five teens from California and ten from other communities nationwide will be acknowledged for demonstrating exceptional leadership and impact in repairing the world. Anyone interested in nominating a teen, or any teen interested in applying directly, is welcome to visit www.dillerteenawards.org to begin the nomination or application process. The nomination deadline is December 18, 2019, and all applications must be completed by January 8, 2020.
The Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards were the vision of Bay Area philanthropist Helen Diller, who sought to recognize the next generation of socially-committed leaders whose dedication to volunteerism exemplifies the spirit of tikkun olam, a Jewish value meaning “to repair the world.” “Nominating a teen for the Tikkun Olam Awards is a wonderful opportunity for educators, civic leaders, and teen mentors across the country to recognize young Jewish leaders who are creating meaningful change at home and across the globe,” said Jackie Safier, Helen Diller’s daughter and President of the Helen Diller Family Foundation. “We hope the Awards encourage and catalyze a generation of Jewish teens in their ambitious work to repair the world.”
Since 2007, more than $4.5 million has been awarded to 129 teens in recognition of their vision, innovation, and leadership. Each year we recognize 15 more role models as a part of Helen’s living legacy. The Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards is one of many projects funded by the Helen Diller Family Foundation, a supporting foundation of the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin, and Sonoma Counties. A short documentary-style film profiles the 2019 recipients, illustrating the passion, impact, and leadership behind each teen leader. Highlights from the film include: “Through Shine, my teammates and I have connected our interests in innovation with service and meaningful contribution, camaraderie, honed our entrepreneurial skills, and learned the importance of practicing tikkun olam. - Solomon Olshin, 2019 Awardee
“Books for a Change is fueled by not only my passion for reading, but my passion for assisting those who have not been given the opportunities that I have - those who were not able to escape poverty.” - Beatriz De Oliveira, 2019 Awardee
Past recipients of the Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards have made their mark through projects that advocate for a wide range of causes, including: children’s health, homelessness, supporting refugees, creating safer communities through gun safety measures, international literacy, leading STEM programs to empower girls, advocating for dialogue across demographics, and providing resources for special needs families. Beyond bolstering national recognition of the teens and their projects, the Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards fosters a growing network of award recipient alumni who collaborate to form new partnerships, expand existing organizations, and continue striving towards a better world. Awardees have been recognized by some of the world’s foremost institutions and leaders, including the United Nations Foundation, the White House, the Clinton Global Initiative, Forbes 30 Under 30, The Jefferson Awards, CNN Heroes, and the Nickelodeon HALO Awards.
